Tina Doorn

Germfask, Michigan

I have lived in Michigan all my life.  I graduated from Central Michigan University where I took pottery classes with my major courses.  When I retired from a career in education in June of 2000, I returned to my interest in clay that was sparked by the art professor at CMU.  I began my new career by working as a studio assistant for a potter in Grand Rapids, who taught me about throwing clay on the wheel, making glazes, firing a kiln, and running a pottery studio.  In 2009 my husband and I retired to the beautiful Upper Peninsula and today live on the shores of South Manistique Lake in Mackinac County.

My pottery studio is located next door to our home.  With 10 acres of woods, wildflowers, the lake, and wildlife, I have lots of nature to inspire me.  I believe that my appreciation of the beauty of the natural world comes through in my pottery.  The usefulness of a vessel is also an aspect I consider valuable.  It pleases me to be able to create functional stoneware vessels that people can use in their homes for eating and drinking or a finely crafted decorative piece that adds to the beauty of their home.
