Joan Vinette

Fibers
Munising, Michigan

Joan comes from four generations of entrepreneurial women who  have made textiles their livelihood, working in millinery, leatherwork, or custom sewing for boats and homes.   If she's not tending to one of zillions of community or family projects that she happily shoulders, one can find Joan content in the middle of her huge collection of tapestries, woolens, and other natural fibers that she uses to create functional and wearable art.  She loves to mix and match textures and hues, creating pieces that give great pleasure to those who see, wear, and simply hold them.

Joan Vinette

Alger County businesses, families, and organizations have known a great friend in Joan, now "retired" as an MSU Extension Educator,  who continues to forge useful community connections.  Joan puts it this way, "I'm interested in the community around me and how what somebody does can be useful to somebody else."  Having come from a family of boatbuilders, divers and boat racers, Joan is an avid Great Lakes enthusiast, so it was natural for her to create the popular summer program "Life of Lake Superior" that connects local children and their families with their natural surroundings and the businesses that make their livelihood from the lakes.

In keeping with her interest in helping entrepreneurs - especially artists - Joan has been a drive behind opening the UP Scale Art Gallery, working as the President of the Munising Bay Arts Association.  All of us here at the gallery are grateful for Joan's ability, drive, and especially for her enthusiasm for people and the arts.
